Racial Profiling: It's Time to Face the Truth

Rights Working Group's 'Night of a 1,000 Conversations' beginning February 22  launched education phase of the Racial Profiling: Face the Truth campaign.

Over the past year, thousands of people from across the country have gathered in homes, offices, coffee shops, and places of worship to talk about how government  policies are undermining the civil liberties and human rights of people living in America and how to work together to ensure these rights are restored.

Rep. Polis Floor Speech Against Racial Profiling Caused by the 287(g) Program

In a floor speech on Wednesday October 21st, Rep. Jared Polis spoke out against partnerships between local law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"287(g) scares victims and witnesses of crimes to avoid contacting police for fear of being mistreated. 287(g) invites exploitation by those who know that they won’t be reported to police, because it combines the contradictory duties into the same police force."

Department of Homeland Security Expands Controversial 287(g) Program

The Department of Homeland Security said Friday it plans to enter into new agreements with sixty-seven state and local law enforcement agencies. These agreements expand the existing 287(g) program, which delegates some federal immigration enforcement authority to certain state and local agencies. The 287(g) program has come under intense criticism in recent months, with over 500 organizations, including the ACLU and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, calling on the government to end the program.

Since the Declaration of Independence, America has striven to uphold fairness and due process.  But today, a broken immigration system denies basic human rights and due process to people who live here.  In the aftermath of 9-11, immigrants have borne the brunt of harsh policies with the U.S. government allowing raids and arrests without warrants, holding thousands in inhumane detention conditions, and deporting people without a fair trial.
