Judge Bolton granted the Obama Administration an early victory in its bid to overturn Arizona's problematic law SB 1070, which would have required police to inquire about the immigration status of every person they stopped. Rights Working Group (RWG) views SB 1070 as a recipe for racial profiling and other human rights violations, and welcomes the partial injunction issued by Judge Bolton.
Judge Bolton considered the Justice Department's lawsuit as well as lawsuits filed by several immigrants' rights and civil rights groups, including RWG members and allies the American Civil Liberties Union, the Asian American Justice Center's affiliate Asian Pacific American Legal Center, the National Council of La Raza, the Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund, the National Immigration Law Center, and National Day Laborer Organizing Network.
"This ruling should send a clear message to other states and localities that are considering similar laws - states should not be attempting to regulate federal immigration laws," said Margaret Huang, Executive Director of RWG. "The judge clearly understood that such an onerous law would negatively affect the rights of all residents of Arizona.
