Position: Communications Intern

 

Rights Working Group is a coalition of more than 250 community-based groups and national organizations dedicated to protecting the rights of all people in the United States, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, race, or national origin.  Our goal is to ensure that the government's actions honor the principles of fairness, equality, and justice.

 

The RWG uses a human rights framework to tie together the various interests of its diverse membership.  The work of RWG is guided by the following principles:

 

  • Ensure due process and the right to a fair trial for all people jailed by the government, including meaningful access to the courts, the right to counsel, the right to know the charge against them, and the right to a fair bond.
  • End arbitrary and indefinite detentions and arbitrary and unfair deportations.
  • Ensure that government authorities do not subject anyone to cruel or abusive treatment or torture.
  • End selective enforcement of the laws, including immigration laws based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, or gender, as well as, speech or belief.
  • Ensure that the United States is a safe haven from persecution with fair and just asylum procedures.
  • Protect everyone's rights to privacy and right to be free of unreasonable searches and seizures, including upholding constitutional limits on secret surveillance.
  • Protect everyone's right to free exercise of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, including the right to dissent, without fear of government spying or intimidation.
  • Respect the First Amendment and preserve the principle of open government by ending secret arrests, secret detentions, and secret trials.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in updating and maintaining national websites (www.rightsworkinggroup.org and www.nightof1000conversations.org) by creating and uploading new text, searching for and posting relevant member news and reports, and photos.
  • Assisting with drafting press statements and releases, media advisories and preparing press packets for news conferences
  • Conducting media research to expand RWG's media databases
  • Assisting in planning and executing long-term projects (e.g. improving RWG's outreach to new media, organizing and publicizing new educational campaigns, and coordination with RWG members on communication)
  • Assisting with drafting letters to the editor, op-eds, and posting comments to online articles and blogs

Qualifications

 

  • Must be a junior or senior undergraduate student or a graduate student in communications, public relations, mass communications or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice issues
  • Strong writing/editing skills and familiarity with journalistic style
  • Ability to perform detail oriented work with accuracy/timeliness
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly organized, dependable, and able to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literate; proficient with Word, Excel, Power Point, internet searches
  • Preferred proficiency in Spanish (written and spoken)
  • Preferred interest in civil liberties, civil rights, and human rights

Policy interns will contribute to the policy department's daily operations and will work on long-term projects of the RWG.

 

Responsibilities Include

  • Performing Internet and/or legal research
  • Ongoing data collection relating to RWG issues
  • Preparation of materials for legislative efforts
  • Analyzing statutes, regulations and legislation pertinent to the Rights Working Group
  • Draft letters and fact sheets on various civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights issues.
  • Attend Congressional hearings, briefings, press conferences and coalition meetings as needed.
  • Provide administrative support for the department.

 

Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly organized, dependable, and able to prioritize tasks

Ÿ   Assisting with campaign outreach in the field focusing on youth and student organizations

Ÿ   Maintain communication and coordination with RWG members on current issues and activities

Ÿ   Draft and produce materials for newsletters, toolkits, fliers, brochures, and other outreach materials

Ÿ   Conduct research for RWG campaigns including but not limited to stances on RWG issues from legislators and candidates, local organizations, and other issue-related subjects

Ÿ   Assist in organizing trainings and events for RWG members

Ÿ   Participate in local and national coalition meetings

Ÿ   Provide assistance to the department with other administrative tasks, as necessary

Ÿ   Work extensively to promote and organize RWG's Racial Profiling: Face the Truth campaign.
