Fitting the Description: Rhode Island Communities Speak out about Racial Profiling

Video:

Check our this new video from the Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) and Next Generation Media on racial profiling in Rhode Island. A great collection of stories from community members advocating for the state's Comprehensive Racial profiling Prevention Act.

The Comprehensive Racial Profiling Prevention Act introduced by Rep. Grace Diaz, would build on existing state laws requiring data collection, and would especially protect juveniles and passengers in cars from racial profiling. Rhode Island is one of a few states where community groups are working with state legislators to introduce strong legislation to stop racial profiling. On Wednesday, January 25th, the Racial Profiling Coalition of Rhode Island held a press conference and film screening to advocate for a new law that would further protect communities in Rhode Island from racial profiling. PrYSM members attended the press conference holding signs of "Do I fit the description?" "Is my skin color a crime?" to show how youth of color are criminalized through racial profiling law enforcement practices.
