Remembering 9-11

September 11, 2008

Washington, D.C., - On this day, the Rights Working Group sends it heartfelt thoughts to the victims and families of those who lost their lives or were directly impacted by the attacks of September 11, 2001. The large scale attacks on civilian populations resulting in the death of 2,974 people and the physical and psychological injuries of thousands more were crimes against humanity, and those who were involved should be held accountable. As the country reflects on this day, the Rights Working Group encourages this and any future administration not to use this tragedy as an excuse to sacrifice civil and human rights for a perception of increased security. The United States should continue to aspire to fulfill its mission of providing liberty and justice for all.

The Rights Working Group is a coalition of more than 250 community-based grassroots groups and national organizations formed in the aftermath of 9-11 that works to ensure civil liberties and human rights protections for all people living in the U.S.
