“Arizona is a microcosm of what’s happening around the country in terms of violations of civil and human rights, racial profiling.” Taking us to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, “Checkpoint Nation? Building Community Across Borders” is a new video by Rights Working Group and human rights group Breakthrough documenting shocking harassment, the reality of racial profiling, and immigration enforcement at the border, while highlighting growing multiracial solidarity in the struggle for justice.
Use this video to start a conversation in your community about the themes of solidarity, racial justice, immigrant rights, and how the United States has changed since 9/11.
CHECKPOINT NATION? was produced to complement RWG's National Week of Action: Reflecting on Our Loss and Reclaiming Our Rights around the 10th anniversary of 9/11. RWG's new report, “Reclaiming Our Rights: Reflections on Racial Profiling in a Post-9/11 America,” offers personal reflections of organizers and advocates who have worked on these issues over the past ten years, and will be released on September 14th.
The groups that are featured in the video are ACLU – Arizona, Alliance for Educational Justice, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, Derechos Humanos, DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), Funding Exchange, VAMOS Unidos.
